Louisiana-Pacific Earnings Call Shows Siding Momentum

Tipranks - Wed Nov 4, 6:18PM CST

Louisiana-Pacific Corp ((LPX)) has held its Q3 earnings call. Read on for the main highlights of the call.

Louisiana-Pacific’s latest earnings call carried a constructive but measured tone. Record siding sales, renewed growth, stronger distributor sell-through, improved guidance and disciplined safety performance stood out, although raw-material and freight inflation, weak housing conditions, OSB losses and distribution-transition noise remain important concerns.

Siding Returns to Growth

Louisiana-Pacific’s siding volume rose 2% year over year in the third quarter, while net sales increased 7%. The performance set a new sales record and exceeded the high end of guidance despite a 2% decline in single-family housing starts.

Record Siding Profitability

Siding revenue reached a record $473 million, above the top of the guided range, while EBITDA was $119 million. The adjusted EBITDA margin was slightly above 25%, highlighting the segment’s earnings strength.

Pricing and Volume Supported Results

Average siding prices increased 5%, mainly because of list-price increases. Higher volumes added $8 million of revenue and $4 million of EBITDA, in line with the company’s historical incremental margins.

Expert Finish Gains Importance

Expert Finish accounted for 10% of siding volume and 16% of siding revenue during the quarter. The figures show the premium product continues to represent a larger share of LP’s sales mix.

Distribution Network Expands

LP has expanded and simplified its siding distribution network through Specialty Building Products and other partners. Forest Products Supply Company and Palmer Donovan were added, and distributors will carry the full SmartSide line, including Expert Finish and Naturals.

Distributor Sell-Through Improves

Expert Finish sell-through rose 8% from the prior-year quarter and 13% from the second quarter. Prime SmartSide sell-through was comparable with last year, while channel inventories for both products declined sequentially and year over year.

Taylor Morrison Names LP Strategic Vendor

Taylor Morrison named LP its strategic vendor of the year. LP said enterprise programs are using its broader portfolio, including SmartSide and OSB, to reach markets where the company has historically had less penetration.

Pricing Outlook for 2027

LP expects a net price increase of roughly 3.5% to 4% in 2027 on a similar product mix, with Prime SmartSide likely above Expert Finish. The new prices are expected to ship in early to mid-January, and management expects siding to remain price-cost positive absent a major raw-material shock.

Fourth-Quarter Siding Outlook

LP expects fourth-quarter siding growth of about 3%, driven mainly by price and partly offset by an unfavorable mix. Siding revenue is projected at $390 million to $400 million, with EBITDA of $80 million to $90 million.

Full-Year Guidance Improves

LP raised the lower ends of its full-year revenue and EBITDA ranges. Siding revenue is expected at $1.66 billion to $1.67 billion, siding EBITDA at $415 million to $425 million, and total company EBITDA at $270 million to $280 million.

Cash Flow and Liquidity Remain Solid

LP generated $112 million in operating cash flow and invested $56 million in capital expenditures to maintain assets and support SmartSide and Expert Finish demand. It returned $21 million through dividends and ended the quarter with $265 million in cash and more than $1 billion of liquidity.

Safety Performance Remains Strong

LP received the Engineered Wood Association’s safest-company award for a fourth consecutive year. Its third-quarter total incident rate was 0.4, while the Roaring River, North Carolina, Expert Finish facility reached one million work hours without a recordable incident.

Recognition for Workplace and Sustainability Efforts

Newsweek named LP one of America’s Greatest Companies. The recognition considered financial performance, innovation, workplace culture and environmental sustainability.

OSB Volumes Rise, Valuation Helps EBITDA

OSB volumes increased 7% in the quarter, but inventory valuation adjustments provided a $14 million EBITDA benefit. Operational improvements and cost discipline added another $3 million in SG&A and other savings.

OSB Pricing Expected to Improve

OSB average selling prices increased in September. LP expects fourth-quarter realizations to improve as late-quarter price increases work through the business, although the benefit will be affected by normal timing lags.

Shed Segment Shows a Rebound

Shed sell-through recovered in the second half after a difficult start to the year and inventory rebalancing by distribution partners. LP is seeking a larger share of fabricators’ spending across flooring, roofing and trim.

Enterprise Partnership Pipeline Advances

LP is working with large builders and manufactured-housing producers during the current request-for-proposal season. Management said bundled offerings are attracting interest through installation efficiency, durability and product quality.

Distribution Footprint Offers Long-Term Benefits

The new network covers more than 100 locations through 12 or 13 partners, supported by a field sales organization larger than LP’s own. Management expects better geographic reach, stronger alignment and improved execution over time.

OSB Capacity Is Being Managed Carefully

LP said it has optimized its OSB network after operating at roughly 75% utilization before the Jasper and Maniwaki actions. Management believes the business is positioned to withstand another downturn and enter 2027 with a more balanced capacity base.

Brick Substitution Could Broaden the Market

LP is seeing a modest shift away from brick because of its labor intensity and cost. Management said the trend could expand SmartSide’s geographic addressable market, although it is not expected to become a major growth driver.

Wildfire Codes Have Not Changed Sell-Through

LP has not seen western sell-through change relative to housing starts because of wildfire-urban-interface codes. The company is monitoring increased attention to those rules in Colorado and evaluating potential fire-solution products.

Raw Materials Pressure Siding Earnings

Higher siding raw-material costs reduced third-quarter EBITDA by $12 million year over year. The main pressures were MDI resins and paper overlay, with management noting that near-term exposure is difficult to reduce without changing products.

Freight Adds Another Headwind

Higher fuel prices and freight rates, together with tight trucking capacity, reduced siding EBITDA by another $6 million. The cost pressure came despite the segment’s favorable pricing and volume performance.

Maintenance and Outages Raise Costs

Other siding costs reduced EBITDA by $9 million. The impact primarily reflected planned maintenance projects and lower inventory levels during related outages.

Expert Finish Volume Slips Slightly

Total siding volume increased 2%, but Expert Finish volume declined slightly during the quarter. The small decline contrasts with the product’s stronger revenue contribution and improved distributor sell-through.

OSB Revenue and EBITDA Decline

OSB revenue was $180 million and EBITDA was a loss of $24 million. Average selling prices were modestly below the prior year, producing a $7 million year-over-year decline in both revenue and EBITDA.

OSB Faces Inflation and Mix Pressure

Raw-material and labor inflation reduced OSB EBITDA by $7 million year over year, while unfavorable mix cost another $1 million. LP attributed the mix change partly to customers favoring lower-priced commodity OSB products.

OSB Mills Are Curtailed

LP indefinitely curtailed its Jasper, Texas, mill and temporarily idled its Maniwaki, Quebec, mill in response to soft demand. The actions are expected to reduce fourth-quarter OSB volumes while lowering exposure to weak market conditions.

Fourth-Quarter OSB Loss Expected

Assuming OSB prices remain flat through year-end, LP expects the segment to lose about $35 million of EBITDA in the fourth quarter. Most of the favorable “other” impact recorded in the third quarter was nonrecurring.

Full-Year OSB Loss Remains Significant

LP expects full-year OSB EBITDA to be about a $95 million loss. Lower volumes and higher input costs are expected to outweigh only part of the benefit from higher selling prices.

Fourth-Quarter Siding Price-Cost Risk

Management said siding price-cost conditions will be most challenged in the fourth quarter. Raw materials remain a headwind, while earlier benefits from pricing and mix are beginning to normalize.

Housing Affordability Remains Difficult

LP continues to operate amid housing affordability pressure, lower single-family starts and mortgage-rate concerns. Compressed homebuilder margins are also influencing purchasing decisions and product mix.

Distribution Transition Takes Time

The move to the new distribution network is being phased over two or three quarters. LP must reduce inventories with departing partners, transfer products to new distributors and avoid creating an unusually large one-time volume increase.

Near-Term Transition Noise Expected

Management acknowledged that onboarding and educating new distribution partners will create short-term disruption. LP nevertheless expects the expanded network to deliver better results once the transition is complete.

Shed Market Remains Essentially Flat

Although shed sell-through improved during the second half, LP described the underlying market as approximately flat year over year. The company’s focus is on taking more share from existing fabricator relationships.

Structural Products Face Mix Pressure

Compressed homebuilder margins are encouraging a shift toward more commodity OSB products. That preference is creating a less favorable mix for LP’s structural-solutions business.

Maintenance Capital Spending Reduced

LP lowered its 2026 sustaining-maintenance capital-expenditure guidance. The reduction mainly reflects deferred projects, including work associated with idled facilities.

Raw-Material Exposure Is Difficult to Offset

LP said there are limited near-term ways to reduce exposure to crude oil and related inputs. The company uses MDI resins exclusively in siding and does not want to lower dosage rates or make abrupt product changes.

Wildfire-Code Opportunity Remains Limited

LP is monitoring the growing focus on wildfire-urban-interface building codes and developing possible fire-related products. Management said the rules affect only a small portion of the addressable market and have not changed the company’s broader growth path.

Fourth-Quarter and Full-Year Guidance

LP expects siding revenue of $390 million to $400 million and siding EBITDA of $80 million to $90 million in the fourth quarter, with roughly 3% siding growth. Full-year siding revenue is forecast at $1.66 billion to $1.67 billion, siding EBITDA at $415 million to $425 million, total EBITDA at $270 million to $280 million, and OSB EBITDA at about a $95 million loss.

What Investors Should Watch

LP has not issued full 2027 guidance, but it anticipates net pricing of roughly 3.5% to 4% on a similar mix, with shipments at new prices expected in early to mid-January. Investors will be watching housing demand, raw-material costs, OSB pricing and the pace of the distribution transition.

LP’s call showed a company gaining momentum in siding while managing meaningful structural challenges. Record siding sales, strong liquidity, improving distribution and better guidance support the positive case, but OSB losses, inflation and a pressured housing market remain significant risks.

The earnings call suggests Louisiana-Pacific is building a stronger long-term platform around SmartSide, Expert Finish and enterprise partnerships. Near-term results may remain uneven, yet management’s confidence in pricing, distribution reach and capacity discipline gives investors several constructive developments to monitor.
